The Universe: Evolution Or The Work Of God’s Fingers?

antifan-real.deviantart.com

Whenever we read about evolution, it’s usually preceded by the word theory. A theory, according to Webster’s, is described as “speculation, an idea, hypothesis or a scheme.” A theory then is an unproven statement.

Darwin’s theory of evolution teaches that the first life upon the earth came by “spontaneous generation,” or by “electrochemical action,” or some unknown process millions of years ago in the warm ocean slime. Thus it is the theory of evolution that life sprang out of dead matter, or that the living came from the non-living.

Now probability is the mathematics of chance, and therefore probability should have a great deal to do with evolution.
Given a monkey, a typewriter and a stack of paper, by chance alone, words, sentences, even whole books could be written, right? This is a doctrine deemed holy by a not-insignificant number of educated men in the biological and geological sciences today.

Given enough time, chance alone will produce simple life forms … given more time, complex forms of life will come into being … given enough time, even man … highly intelligent man could arise. But is this true? Would a miracle be needed?

The theory of evolution claims to operate without the need of miracles. What could be a greater miracle than dead matter giving life? Evolution starts with matter, force, energy and life already existing. It does not show how life first came into existence.

But there is an absolute law of science called the law of biogenesis, which states that life can only come from life. God put within His creation evidence to show that life must be imparted by a lifegiver.

Over the centuries, countless experiments have been done to prove this. Italian scientist Redi in 1668 prevented flies from depositing their eggs on meat which prevented maggots from hatching. He concluded that “new life” does not spring spontaneously from dead matter.

Years later, Tyndall and Louis Pasteur showed through their experiments that this “law of biogenesis” held true. Nothing in nature, nor man’s efforts, can produce life from non-living matter. No evidence has ever been given to show that the non-living can spontaneously change into the living. There is no law ordained by God which demands the non-living matter of His creation to give rise to life. Dead matter never will produce life.

Life is a gift given only by God, whether temporary or eternal (John 5:26; Rom. 6:23). God breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul (Gen. 1:7). As the Lifegiver, He set within man, animals and plants, the ability to reproduce according to set laws.

The theory of evolution obviously cannot be proven by observing creation. Yet the biblical account of creation is consistent with what one observes. And if the Bible is true, then evolution is a lie! Faith and accurate science can and do coexist; but evolution and the biblical account of creation cannot!

An Even Bigger Question

Now a lot of people will say that evolution and the creation of the universe are two entirely separate matters. But I disagree.

  • First, we have to understand that the universe could not come to be by itself, just as life on earth could not come to existence by chance. The two are tied into each other inseparably.
  • Second, to have the universe created by chance, then conditions on earth ready for life forms, with subsequent life formed out of nothing, requires more faith than Christians need in God.
  • Third, science has never answered “why hasn’t man found life in space?” Why would we be the only life forms in the universe?
  • Fourth, our orderly universe is governed by irrefutable laws already in existence. How did these laws come to be? How did they take force without a Lawgiver? The existence of unchangeable, absolute, yet unseen laws demands the existence of a Supreme Lawgiver. God declares in His written word that He is that Lawgiver (James 4:12).

The Universe Defies Logic!

Our own Milky Way is just one of billions of galaxies. Our solar system with the sun, earth and other planets, is traveling through space at the fantastic speed of 435 miles per second, or a little over one and a half million miles per hour! The position of our earth in this universe changes every second.

Why don’t we go flying off into space, as this planet speeds along its path? Because the law of gravity holds us to this planet. Who made that law? The answer: “There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?” (James 4:12). God is that Lawgiver.

One would think with all these gigantic masses of galaxies hurtling through space at such a tremendous speed that once in a while there would be a collision between a galaxy and a planet. Yet we do not see any collisions between these galaxies.

The universe operates according to definite, immutable laws. The existence of law demands a Lawgiver, and these laws are upheld and sustained by the Sustainer, who is God. Only an all-powerful Creator God could have created such an organized, well-running universe.

But There Is Life Out There!

Here’s the million dollar question: “Surely if life springs forth as a result of evolution, we would see it developing somewhere else in the universe in addition to our rather tiny planet. Yet, despite the billions spent on deep space telescopes, manned missions to space, probes to Mars—and despite seeing galaxies farther away than anyone thought possible—no one has found even a blade of grass, much less sentient life.

The one form of life that does exist and always has existed will never be discovered by even our most intricate and sophisticated equipment. And that life is interested in what happens on earth. Beings in outer space have sent messages to the earth. There have been visits to the earth and at least one major visit is projected for the future.

But it’s not the science-fiction-type visit fantasized by writers — little green men landing a spacecraft in a wheat field commanding the farmer, “Take me to your leader.” There have been at least five individuals in human history who have seen and described the only provable form of life beyond our earth’s atmosphere. These men have unimpeachable credentials — men of great integrity. And we have written accounts of what they observed.

From their accounts we can understand what intelligent life forms really exist in the universe. The names of those who have seen and written descriptions of extraterrestrial life are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Paul and John. And their accounts are found in the pages of the books we call the Bible.

So why the continued and profound push to find life in space? Because the evolutionary theory depends on it.

The Power In The Universe

By exploring the size of merely one galaxy, we should be able to get a clearer picture of just how incomprehensibly powerful and vast this universe is.

Look at the power of our sun. What you are seeing is a continuous chain of nuclear explosions in a reaction of unimaginable power — a giant thermonuclear reactor. It is composed mainly of hydrogen that is gradually changing into helium. Deep inside the sun’s core tremendous gravitational forces, 250 billion times those of earth, compress hydrogen atoms until the heat and pressure force a thermonuclear reaction to take place.

Energy released is thrust toward the surface, but the sun’s great mass pulls it back. It may take up to 15 million years for the energy to jostle its way through to the surface and escape as heat and radiation.

Scientists estimate that nearly four million tons of hydrogen are transformed into energy every second in the nuclear holocaust on our sun. Remember, it took only a 30th of an ounce to destroy Hiroshima.

Now think on how much energy has to be held together to forge the atoms of even the most commonplace and seemingly insignificant of God’s creations — a sparrow, a spider or a leaf? If all the energy compacted in a gram of matter could be released, it would supply as much energy as Hoover Dam produces in about 18 and a half hours. Put another way, the matter in a 150-pound person, if converted completely to energy, would supply as much energy as Hoover Dam could produce in 144 years.

Yet God made giant stars 1,000 times the size of our sun! Can we ever begin to appreciate just how great God is? No wonder He could never allow mortal man to see the full power that radiates from Him. Nothing made of flesh and blood could survive that experience.

But God has, through His creation, given us hints, mere suggestions, of the immensity of His power. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they [those who don’t or won’t believe in God] are without excuse,” wrote Paul (Romans 1:20).

The physical things God has made can teach us — if we have eyes to see. But, sad to say, many scientists today have rejected the very idea of God. Never before have they known so much about the universe. Never before has there been more reason to believe in a Creator. Not so long ago, sailors were afraid to sail over the horizon for fear they would fall off the earth. Now we travel into space routinely, discovering, measuring, analyzing and quantifying. And every breakthrough leads inexorably toward one conclusion — that there must have been a time when all that we see began.
But that implies a Creator, and that is something that many scientists cannot — or will not — admit. And so they “became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (verse 21).

One Vast and Lifeless Playground

Now let’s have a look at the vastenss of space. When the Hubble telescope focused on a small speck in the sky—in an area that seemed to be void of stars—astronomers discovered that this small speck actually contained 1,500 galaxies! Think about that! We’re talking about one tiny  speck in the sky. How many more trillions of galaxies are there in this universe, each containing billions of stars and planets — that float beyond the reach of our puny instruments. The number, in all probability, is unimaginably large?

If you could count all the stars in just our own galaxy, at the rate of 125 stars every minute, it would take over 3,000 years to count them. And there are hundreds of billions of galaxies with hundreds of billions of stars—some with as many as 1 trillion stars.

Conservative estimates of the known universe’s size place it at over 20 thousand million light years wide. That is about 120 million million million million miles. The number of galaxies is estimated to be a few trillion. If we use an arbitrary figure of 3 trillion, and estimate that each galaxy has about 100 billion stars, that means that the known universe has stars that number over 30 with 23 zeros behind it, or 300 thousand million million million individual stars. That figure is virtually impossible to comprehend.

Even so, most of space is empty (Job 26:7). This is because there are vast tracts of space between the stars and planets in each galaxy, and gigantic distances between the galaxies themselves. The galaxies are like a few specks of dust floating freely in an enormous room. Who knows what may be created in all the empty spaces? Who knows for sure what awaits us “out there”?

Space Is BIG!

Let’s get an even better perspective of universal size. Traveling in a rocket at a maximum speed of 25,000 miles per hour, it took the Apollo 17 crew three days to cover the 250,000 miles to reach the surface of the moon. Had it been possible to travel the distance to the sun (some 93 million miles), it would take over five months at that same speed to cover the distance.

Now imagine this scale model: the four planets in our solar system nearest the sun—Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars—all fit comfortably on a space about the size of a dime, with Mars’s orbit represented by the circumference of the dime.

The most distant large planet in our solar system, Neptune is rotating at a distance about 14 inches outside that dime. Little Pluto’s orbit is a little bigger than Neptune’s, and tilted at an angle. It is about 40 times farther away from the sun than Earth is.

On this scale, you can comfortably wrap your arms around our entire solar system. Now, how far away do you suppose the nearest star would be from our scale model? 50 feet? 100 feet? Astoundingly, it would be ONE MILE away! It takes light 4.3 years to reach Earth from the star Alpha Centauri—and that’s the next closest star in space! There really is a lot of “space” out there!

But let’s not stop there. We are part of an immense spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. Alpha Centauri and our sun are merely two average-sized stars among at least 200 billion others that make up our galaxy. To give you an idea of how big the Milky Way is, according to our scale model, the center of the galaxy would be 6,000 miles from our dime! Try to imagine that! It would take light, at 700 million mph, 100,000 years to travel the diameter of our galaxy alone!

Here’s another perspective. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, which means that from a distance it looks like a pinwheel, or a big disc in the center with flat arms going out in all directions. Located on one of these discs—which is rotating around the center of the galaxy—is our solar system: the sun, moon, Earth and the planets. The star of our solar system, the sun, is located about two thirds of the way out from the center of the galaxy—roughly 28,000 light years from the center. Whereas it takes the Earth one year to orbit the sun, it takes the sun 250 million years to make just one orbit of the center of the galaxy. And the Milky Way is not the only galaxy in the universe.

Search For Life Continues

Scientists spend millions of dollars launching space probes, transmitting radio signals, searching the skies for signs of intelligent life. None has been found so far and the continued search for aliens is likely to fail also.

With new findings in astronomy, geology and paleontology, scientists now find that the Earth’s ability to sustain life is much more rare—and unique in the universe—than previously thought.

The book “Rare Earth,” reveals this train of thought: “Almost everywhere else, the radiation levels are too high, the right chemical elements too rare, the hospitable planets to few and the rain of killer rocks too intense for life ever to have evolved into advanced communities” (International Herald Tribune, Feb. 9, 2000).

The search for life is fundamentally based upon a belief in evolution: If life evolved here on earth, surely it must have evolved elsewhere in this vast universe. Every hint of hope that has emerged from these searches, some of which have been vast projects costing multiple millions of dollars, subsequently have been proven false. Yet the dogged search continues, because scientists are so determined to prove evolution correct.

Grasping at Straws

On our earth, over 20,000 meteorites have been discovered. Of these, only 12 of are believed to have come from Mars. In 1996, NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin claimed that NASA  made a startling discovery which pointed to the possibility that a primitive form of microscopic life may have existed on Mars more than three billion years ago” (NASA Press Release, Aug. 6, 1996).

ALH84001, the meteorite believed to contain evidence of life on Mars, was discovered in Antarctica in 1984, but was only recently reported to have come from Mars. Scientists determined the chemical composition of the potato shaped rock matched characteristics of Martian soil sampled by the Viking spacecraft.

Much of the world was abuzz with excitement at this announcement, but in truth, this discovery had virtually no significance whatsoever! That’s because the focus was on microfossils in a small rock assumed to be from Mars.

John Pike, director of space policy for the federation of American Scientists said: “This is the biggest thing that has ever happened.”

Since that time, surprisingly little has been revealed about evidence found in the rock. Such a dramatic announcement by NASA should have been followed by further scientific support and proof. So the absence of explanation and proof about this rock reveals that scientists were not able to provide evidence that their postulations were accurate.
Even with subsequent findings which seem to prove that this meteorite does not contain any evidence of life, scientists are still unwilling to relinquish the idea of alien life on Mars.

Who Made It All?

The majesty of the universe reveals the existence of an intelligent Creator. Many scientists erroneously theorize that the entire material universe—from its most minute, intricate details, to its most jaw-dropping, titanic components—all came about as a result of chance. Wrong! All the scientific opinion in the world could never make the statistical impossibility of such a theory one iota less impossible!

The glory of the heavens was designed and created by the all-powerful Master of the universe. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). In other words, looking at the magnificence of creation tells us a lot about the magnificence of the God who created it — a great thinker, planner and designer. His creation is such an impressive accomplishment, that God dares anyone to match Him.

“To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One” (Isaiah 40:25). As awesome as creation is, God must marvel that people could still concoct a way to explain it as an “accident”!

The Bible is chock full of scriptures expound upon God’s creative power. Look at the first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning God created the [heavens] and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God existed prior to any physical matter. He is responsible for the whole material creation.

The question is, why did God create it all? And why the earth? Think again of how tiny the earth is in comparison with the universe. It’s like a mere grain of sand among miles of desert dunes. What is its purpose?  What is man’s purpose?

Humanity’s Incredible Destiny

Right now the world is defined by violence, selfishness, depression, arguing, greed, corruption, and pollution. If we were able to colonize other planets, we would merely bring our evil human nature right along with us. God knows we’re not ready to go out into the universe yet!

And that is the very reason why He made us physical, mortal beings. The Earth is a training ground. If we fail, we will simply die and return to the dust of the ground, from where we came (Genesis 3:19). But if we prove ourselves—if, after a life of test and trial, God knows He can count on us to follow Him and obey Him—He will give us the gift of eternal life!
At that point, the training ground will have served its purpose, and we will be made into spirit beings.

“Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed … the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (I Corinthians 15:51-53).

Do you believe these verses in your Bible? Or will you continue to hang on to the false beliefs your denominational church teaches? Scripture says we will actually have the same glorious spirit body that God has! (Philippians 3:21). That is why God created us to look like Himself – He is actually fashioning us into spirit-born sons of God – to be in the God family.

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM; for we shall see him as he is” (I John 3:2).

Once we have grown to possess the same perfect character that God has, and are trustworthy enough to begin expanding out into space, then God’s ambitious plans for populating the universe can be realized.

Paul Realized Our Future

Notice an intriguing passage in the Bible where the apostle Paul was inspired to look into the future. He wrote in Hebrews 2:6-8:

“But one testified in a certain place, saying, ‘What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You take care of him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of Your hands. You have put all things in subjection under his feet.’ For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.”

Read them again carefully. Eventually — when we have qualified — God intends for us to rule over everything He created and will create. On this tiny little speck of a planet, He is training us for our vast future responsibilities. His desire is to give us eternal life and raise us to the level of the God Family itself (Matt. 19:29, Rom. 8:17-21, I John 3:1-2)!

Our potential is to be given jurisdiction over the entire universe! What are we going to do then? … scriptures indicate we shall impart life to billions and billions of dead planets, as life has been imparted to this earth. We will create, as God directs and instructs.

Revelation 21 and 22 show there will then be no more pain, no suffering, no evil, because we will have learned to choose God’s way of good; living an eternal life of accomplishment; never growing tired and weary, always alive — full of joyous energy, strength and power! But we must first qualify for this honor.

Creation Longs for Us!

All astronomers and scientific findings indicate what the Bible shows: although the stars produce light and heat, the planets—except for this Earth—are in a state of death and decay.Yet they will not remain that way forever!

In Romans 8, Paul says: “….For the creation [all the planets and stars and galaxies] waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God [when those who qualify are transformed into spirit]; for the creation was subjected to futility [meaning, it could decay], not of its own will but by the will of him who subjected it in hope [God]; because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God.

“We know that the whole creation [the whole universe, which is now in a state of decay] has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves [humans who possess God’s Holy Spirit], who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for [our birth] as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Romans 8:18-23; Revised Standard Version).

Did you grasp what this said? The universe, presently filled with dead planets, is groaning and  waiting with eager longing for the moment when God will glorify mortal humans into powerful spirit beings, and begin sending them out to beautify, improve, care for, and bring life!

God simply wouldn’t have made the universe so great, so expansive, if He didn’t have astronomical plans for it! Scientists hold their beliefs about the origins of life on faith—and the emptiness of space proves it. And like scientists, most religious teachers offer no reasonable answers as to why God created an entire universe filled with stars, planets, black holes, comets and nebulae—and then left it vacant except for a single planet in the Milky Way. But there is a definitive answer. And it makes one think about how little Astronomers (and supposed teachers of the Bible), really know about our awesome universe.
